Top 5 Investing Platforms: A Guide for Investors of All Levels
Mar 27, 2024Embarking on the journey of investing can be both exciting and daunting. With numerous platforms available, each offering its own set of features and benefits, choosing the right one can be challenging. In this comprehensive guide, I'll share my personal experiences and insights into five of my favorite investing platforms. From the innovative "pie chart" approach of M1 Finance to the simplicity of Acorns' automated investing, you'll discover a range of options suitable for investors of all levels. Whether you're a beginner looking for a hands-off approach or a seasoned investor seeking advanced features, there's a platform that's perfect for you.
This platform stands out with its innovative "pie chart" investing style, allowing users to effortlessly set percentages for stocks and bonds. I appreciate how M1 rebalances my portfolio automatically, maintaining my desired allocation. For example, say a portfolio has preset investments to be 50% in SPY (ETF), 40% in VOO (ETF), and 10% in NVDA (stock). Whenever money is deposited to the M1 investment account, M1 automatically buys the stock to keep the portfolio balanced as such.
I also love their app layout as it’s very intuitive for my brain and learning style. Moreover, its intuitive app layout makes monitoring investments a breeze, coupled with competitive fees that won't eat into returns. M1 also offers model portfolios to help you pick your investments, and they do offer a bonus when you sign up and make qualifying deposit within 14 days. With no commission, trading, or management fees, M1 is a cost-effective choice for investors. However, it lacks robo-advisors, which may be overwhelming for newbie investors. Fidelity serves as the custodian for all my work 401(k) accounts, offering seamless integration and management across various investment vehicles. Their user-friendly interface provides extensive educational resources, empowering investors to make informed portfolio decisions. Fidelity's planning feature assists with retirement, college, and savings goals, even providing analysis and plans for debt repayment. Additionally, Fidelity Go offers robo-advisory and $0 advisory fees on balances under 25k, with coaching options as your balance grows. However, their app may initially seem less intuitive compared to others, though it becomes user-friendly with familiarity.

Ideal for beginners, Betterment simplifies the investing process with its roboadvisor model and low fees. I started my investing journey with Betterment's preset aggressiveness levels, which eliminated the stress of selecting individual investments. It's a roboadvisor with low fees, offering preset levels of aggressiveness for easy investing. Betterment automatically reinvested my dividends and selected stocks, making it perfect for beginners who prefer a hands-off approach.
Additionally, Betterment provides tax loss harvesting, portfolio options such as socially responsible investing, and varying degrees of aggressiveness to align with your goals. It's the best choice for set it and forget it investing. While its basic app layout may lack some advanced features, it remains an excellent choice for those seeking simplicity in their investment journey. Renowned for its intuitive interface and support for fractional shares, Robinhood caters well to novice investors. The platform's simplicity makes it easy to buy and sell stocks, attracting millennials and first-time investors alike. Additionally, Robinhood offers crypto investing, options and margin trading, along with an education center focused on investing and the stock market. Users can also access a credit card and subscribe to the Robinhood Snacks newsletter for market insights. The membership program, Robinhood Gold, provides benefits such as 5% interest on uninvested money, instant transfers, and IRA matching for a monthly fee. However, it's important to note that options and crypto trading can be risky for uneducated investors, emphasizing the need for thorough understanding before investing.

Great for: beginners to confident investors - they have some features that could be a problem for beginner investors (i.e. options, trading on margin).
While I haven't personally used Acorns, its innovative approach to investing is noteworthy. Acorns makes investing effortless by rounding up purchases to the nearest dollar, automating the process and reducing daily decision-making. With a subscription model starting at $3 a month, Acorns offers a suite of features linked to a checking account. By connecting credit cards and accounts, Acorns automatically invests spare change once it reaches $5. Additionally, Acorns provides automatic portfolio rebalancing, dividend reinvesting, and recurring investments, simplifying the investment process. A new feature allows for custom portfolios, giving users more control. Acorns also offers pre-selected investment portfolios tailored to age, risk, and goals, making investing easy and automated. Moreover, Acorns offers a comprehensive learning center focused on investing and finance education, making it ideal for beginners looking to start investing effortlessly.
